Let’s take a typical case: A biomedical engineering department purchases management software for medical equipment. The company is well represented but the buyers have little knowledge of the market and of existing data-processing solutions. They purchase the software for a few tens of thousands of dollars and the future looks bright. The software is installed on their computers and everybody is happy.
Problems start to arise…the software is slow. Entering of data is non-intuitive and rather complex. The graphics are not interesting. What’s more, the database administrators quickly realize that the monthly numbers are corrupted by the software and do not reflect reality. It becomes very difficult to generate accurate financial reports. Calls are placed to the software company in order to correct the situation. But, the company is large and answers are slow to come. It takes months to correct the data corruption and nothing can be done about the graphics and operating of the software. Employees must keep on working with this inadequate solution. Software that is designed by programmers that are controlled by investors. The result is more than disappointing and technical support is far too costly.
